Director General Sampath Kotuwegoda said that relief operations are underway after houses were destroyed in the heavy rains that have been pouring for a week.
The weather system is moving from the island towards neighboring India, but it has already caused extensive devastation, the DMC reported. “Relief operations are being carried out with the support of the armed forces,” Kotuwegoda told reporters in Colombo.

Even though the cyclone triggered landslides on Wednesday and brought record rainfall across the island, the effects of the weather disturbance have been noticeable since Monday.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over the loss of lives in Sri Lanka, and Lankan officials have said that India is ready to send additional assistance. “We are prepared to provide further aid and support as the situation evolves,” Modi said on X

. To strengthen rescue and relief operations across the country, the government has deployed the armed forces, and military helicopters and boats are being used to evacuate residents trapped in the floods.

In the floods of 2016, 71 people had died nationwide. Officials from the DMC stated that the current flood situation may be worse than that. This week’s weather-related death toll is the highest since June last year, when 26 people died due to heavy rains. In December, 17 people had died in floods and landslides.
Sri Lanka faced its worst-ever flood in June 2003, when 254 people lost their lives.

Therefore, through this, we would like to inform you that before stepping out of your home, please check the weather conditions and then proceed with your work. Pay attention to your safety.
